Surgery for Prostate (TURP & BNI)

Surgery for the prostate gland is a common treatment option for men with an enlarged prostate or bladder outlet obstruction. The two most common types of surgery for bladder outlet obstruction are are Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) and Bladder Neck Incision (BNI).

TURP is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged and causes urinary symptoms like frequency, urgency, poor flow, straining and sense of incomplete passing of urine. TURP involves inserting a small, hollow instrument called a resectoscope through the urethra and into the prostate gland. The resectoscope has a small wire loop that is used to remove small pieces of prostate tissue that are blocking the flow of urine. TURP is typically performed under spinal or general anesthesia and has a high success rate with low risks of complications.

BNI is a surgical procedure that involves making two incisions at the bladder neck which relieves obstruction at the bladder outlet.

Both TURP and BNI are safe and effective treatment options for prostate-related conditions, and the choice of procedure depends on the specific condition and individual patient factors. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of each procedure with a urologist and to carefully consider all options before making a decision.
